Hermès International S.A., Hermès of Paris, or simply Hermès is a French manufacturer of quality goods established in 1837, today specializing in leather, lifestyle accessories, perfumery, luxury goods, and ready-to-wear. Its logo, since the 1950s, is of aDuc carriage with horse.

In 2012, Hermès retail outlets changed its policy regarding returns and exchanges of products. Consumers may only exchange items within ten days of purchase, and only for another color variant of the original purchase. No other post-purchase exchanges are permitted and refunds are never offered, regardless if the consumer has a receipt.

Evelyne

Practical, imaginative, expert: a head of the Hermès Riding Department must think of everything. Évelyne Bertrand, who held that position in 1978, had decided to spare a thought for grooms who are also riders in love with their mounts. It was to enable them to carry brush, sponge, currycomb and other stable items soaked in horse-sweat, but without causing any damage, that the bag which now bears her name is constellated with air-holes.

Their H-shape set in a horseshoe oval makes it so elegant that pedestrians and footsloggers generally have refused to let the riders have the thing to themselves. That is why the H of the Évelyne no longer suggests only material for grooming, but all kinds of other objects as well, all of them a help when thinking on the hoof.

Garden Party

The Garden Party is a classic style from Hermes and is one which thankfully is pretty easy to find – every time I pop into a boutique Isee at least one of these in some color combination on the shelves. Around five years ago Hermes started making all leather versions (prior to that they were usually toile/leather combos) and I’ve admired them ever since! it’s a wonderfully versatile bag at a less shocking price.

The Garden Party is one of the few Hermes bags that is not lined in leather (it’s quite a bit less expensive as a result as well). It has just has one huge compartment where all your items go, and then one big zippered pocket on the side. I often recommend the Garden Party to those who ask me about a good “starter” Hermes bag to introduce them to the brand (though I am by no means an expert!). It’s a classic design, easy to wear and priced between $2-$3.5k depending on the model. Not inexpensive by any means, but definitely one of the brand’s more friendlier priced bags.

Jypsière

This is one of the newest creations from a house that never rests on its laurels but is always looking for exciting new things to do with bags. The irrepressible and bubbly Jean-Paul Gaultier had already been artistic director of Hermès women’s ready-to-wear for several years when he decided that, to complement his autumn 2008 show, he needed a bag that would speak of nature, hunting, fishing, and – this being Gaultier – tradition turned topsy-turvy.

The body, side straps, swivel clasps and brackets from the Birkin were all adapted to make a jumbo game bag (“gibecière”). The plentiful inside pockets, including a phone compartment, promise – and can contain – all kinds of booty, catches and munitions.

Picotin Lock

A good-natured horse, a mound of fragrant hay and a bucolic picnic: that is what we take with us when we carry this bag. Its name? A “picotin” is a peck, being a quarter of a bushel, long the standard measure of grain. Its shape? Inspired by a nosebag, which was fixed, as its name indicates, to the nose of a horse or mule so that it could continue walking as it ate its oats.

Simple and functional, with raw edges and no lining, precious little stitching, it stands securely on its four metal feet. Its fastener does however enable us to squirrel away our treasures in its fold – to hide our light under a (quarter-) bushel.
